DESIGN INSIGHTS

Whenever I enter a shopping mall, my favourite detour is the home décor section of Lifestyle or any similar store. There’s something so thrilling about wandering through the aisles, soaking in the latest trends, and indulging in a bit of window shopping.

But why am I going on about window shopping for home décor? Well, it’s because I’ve noticed that many people when faced with endless options, can get overwhelmed and end up choosing items that aren’t quite right for their space. Just yesterday, I spotted a lady wrestling with rug sizes, clearly unsure about which one would work best in her home. It got me thinking, why not share some tips in today’s newsletter?

Tips to choose appropriate rugs for your space!

Tip 1 - Opt for a larger rug in the dining and bedroom area for smooth circulation

Tip 2 - Harmonize Rug Colors and Patterns with Your Room's Design

Tip 3 - In the living area, choose a rug that anchors the front legs

Today, we’re diving into the world of rugs, helping you choose the perfect one for your space. And don’t worry, I’ll be covering other décor items in upcoming newsletters, so stay tuned for more design insights!

1) Opt for a larger rug in the dining and bedroom area for smooth circulation

Ever walk into a dining room or bedroom and feel like something’s just a bit off? Often, it’s the rug—either too small to tie the space together or just not right for the room’s flow. Imagine sitting down for dinner, only to have your chair catch on the edge of a tiny rug, or waking up and stepping onto a cold floor instead of a soft, welcoming surface. These little annoyances can easily be avoided with the right rug size!

In the dining area, a rug that extends 24"-36" beyond the table will allow chairs to glide smoothly when you push them out. In the bedroom, a rug with 12"-18" of extra space on either side and at the foot of the bed will give you the perfect amount of room to step comfortably into your day.

2) Harmonize Rug Colors and Patterns with Your Room's Design

A common challenge with rugs is choosing a colour and pattern that complements the room's overall design. If the rug doesn’t mesh well with the existing décor, it can create a jarring or mismatched effect. For a harmonious look, consider how the rug’s colours and patterns interact with the rest of the room.

If your room already features bold colours or intricate patterns, opt for a rug in a more neutral tone or with a subtle design. This helps to balance the visual elements and prevents the room from feeling overwhelming. On the other hand, if your space is more understated, a rug with vibrant colours or interesting patterns can become a striking focal point that adds character and energy to the room.

3) In the living area, choose a rug that anchors the front legs

Imagine stepping into your living room, where the sofa and coffee table are perfectly arranged, but something still feels off. The room seems disjointed as if the furniture is floating in space. The culprit? An ill-sized or poorly placed rug that fails to connect the elements.

To bring harmony to your space, as a designer I would recommend choosing a rug that anchors the front legs of your furniture. This simple adjustment ensures that the rug ties everything together, creating a cohesive and inviting atmosphere. With the right rug in place, your living room transforms into a well-grounded haven where every piece feels seamlessly integrated, making the space both functional and beautifully styled.
