Architectural Lighting Tips for Better Spaces

Follow these tips for better lighting in spaces in your design:

Tip 1: Optimize Bathroom Lighting for Functionality and Comfort

Tip 2: Plan Living Room Lighting to Highlight Conversations

Tip 3: Utilize Pendant Lighting for Layered Atmospheres

Tip 1: Optimize Bathroom Lighting for Functionality and Comfort

  • Avoid overhead recessed lights in bathrooms, especially showers, as they create harsh shadows on the face and only light the floor.
  • Use wall-mounted fixtures at eye level for even face illumination, perfect for grooming or applying makeup.
  • Add a semi-flush ceiling fixture to provide ambient lighting, creating a balanced and visually comfortable space.

Tip 2: Plan Living Room Lighting to Highlight Conversations

  • Avoid focused ceiling lights that illuminate only furniture, as this creates visual imbalance and discomfort.
  • Use evenly spaced recessed lights to highlight the central conversation area and ensure that the people in the space are well-lit.
  • Combine central lighting with lamps or sconces to add warmth and layers, creating a welcoming and functional atmosphere.

Tip 3: Utilize Pendant Lighting for Layered Atmospheres

  • Add pendant lights above dining tables or living room seating to provide focused and stylish lighting.
  • Use pendants to draw attention to key areas, creating a cosy and intimate environment for conversations or meals.
  • Pair pendant lights with recessed lighting to achieve a layered lighting effect, balancing ambient, task, and accent lighting for a dynamic and cohesive space.
