Tips for Balancing Plants in Landscape Design
Follow these tips for balancing plants in your landscape design:
Tip 1: Consider Branching Density
Tip 2: Use Color Weight to Your Advantage
Tip 3: Balance Heights with Groupings
Tip 1: Consider Branching Density
- Dense, leafy plants tend to draw the eye more than sparse or bare-branched plants.
- To balance group sparse plants together to create a visual weight equivalent to dense plants.
- And also place dense plants as focal points in areas where you want to draw attention.
Tip 2: Use Color Weight to Your Advantage
- Dark-coloured plants naturally appear "heavier" than light-coloured ones.
- To maintain balance, pair darker foliage with a larger quantity of lighter plants to even out the visual weight.
- And use dark-coloured plants sparingly to emphasize certain parts of the landscape.
Tip 3: Balance Heights with Groupings
- A single tall tree can be balanced by grouping smaller shrubs of similar colour and density.
- Combine 3–5 smaller plants to counterbalance one tall plant.
- Maintain consistency in branching density and foliage shade to harmonize the overall look.
