Hello Reader,

Most people pick a sofa by color and price. Then they live with the wrong one for ten years.

Here are four checks to do before you buy.

1) Seat depth Depth decides how you sit. 20–22" (51–56 cm): back straight, feet flat. Formal. Fits more people. 24"+ (61 cm+): you sink in. Lounge. Fits fewer people, because everyone spreads out.

2) The loose pillow: Want one sofa that does both? Pick a loose lumbar pillow, not a fixed backrest. Pillow in: formal seat. Pillow out: lounge seat. One sofa. Two moods.

3) Skip the L-shape Corner sofas: look cozy. They’re a trap. They’re too bulky for doorways. The corner seat is too deep, so nobody sits there. And the layout is fixed. You can’t flip it.

Instead, get a 4-seater plus a movable ottoman. Put the ottoman left, right, in the middle, or in front as an extra seat. Same floor space. Four layouts.

Bonus: choose a round coffee table. It’s easier to walk around. Keep it 18 in (46 cm) from the sofa.

4) Height Under 16" (41 cm): the low lounge look. Your knees sit above your hips, so you sink in. Informal. 17"–19" (43–48 cm): standard height. Good for formal seating.

Next time you sit on a sofa in a store, you won’t just feel it. You’ll know why it feels that way.

These four checks solve 80% of sofa mistakes. The last 20% is where the sofa goes in your room and how people move around it.

I know it’s hard to remember every measurement, rule, and tip you learn.

That’s exactly why I created Home Designer Academy.

Every month, members get value-packed home design emails like this one — practical tips, measurements, mistakes to avoid, and design principles that you can actually use while designing your home.

You’ll receive 4 of these emails every month, exclusively as a Home Designer Academy member.

But the emails are just one part.

You also get access to a growing library of Home Design PDF Guides, added every month.

So instead of trying to remember everything, you can simply come back to the Classroom, find the guide you need, and use it whenever you're making a design decision.

Think of it as building your own personal home design reference library — one guide at a time.

And all of this costs less than a coffee a month. ☕️

If you’re serious about learning how to design your home yourself, check out Home Designer Academy.

Your space, your taste.

P.S. The longer you’re a member, the bigger your home design library becomes. Every month, you get new guides added to your Classroom — so joining today doesn't just give you access to what’s available now, it starts building a resource you can keep coming back to throughout your entire home design journey.
